Garner Hotel Berlin – Schöneberg by IHG
About
So I've stayed at the Garner Hotel Berlin in Schöneberg a few times now, and honestly? It's one of those places that grows on you. First impression walking up Potsdamer Straße – it's not going to blow you away from the outside, but that's actually kind of refreshing in a city where half the boutique hotels are trying way too hard to look Instagram-perfect.
The location is what really makes this place work. You're right in the heart of Schöneberg, which I mean, if you know Berlin at all, you know this is where you want to be if you're not doing the touristy Mitte thing. There's this great little Turkish bakery literally two blocks down that opens at 6 AM (trust me on the börek), and you can walk to Nollendorfplatz in about eight minutes. The U-Bahn connections are actually solid – you're not stuck taking three transfers to get anywhere decent. What I really appreciate is that it's on a busy enough street that you feel safe walking back at night, but the rooms face away from the main road so you're not dealing with constant traffic noise. Well, mostly – the rooms on the second floor still get some street sounds, but nothing a decent pair of earplugs can't handle.
The rooms themselves are... look, it's a 3-star IHG property, so you know what you're getting. Clean, functional, that slightly generic hotel smell that's not unpleasant but definitely not homey. The beds are actually pretty comfortable though – I've slept worse in places that cost twice as much. Check-in is usually smooth, though I've noticed they can get a bit overwhelmed during the summer months when all the festival crowds hit town. The staff speaks solid English, which honestly shouldn't be noteworthy but you'd be surprised how many Berlin hotels still struggle with that. There's a decent breakfast spread (nothing fancy, but the coffee doesn't taste like water and they actually have proper German bread), and the lobby has this weird retro vibe that somehow works. I think it's supposed to be mid-century modern or something? Whatever it is, it's better than the sterile corporate look most chain hotels go for. The 7.1 rating feels about right – it's not going to win any awards, but it delivers on what it promises without any major surprises. If you're the type who needs a rooftop bar and a spa, look elsewhere. But if you want a reliable base for exploring Schöneberg's gallery scene or hitting up the weekend markets, and you don't want to blow your entire budget on accommodation, this place does the job nicely.

Good quality for good price.
Good quality for a good price. It’s clean and bright.
The room was in the upper floor, it was quite hot there during the summer day.
Excellent stay, good food, for the price you aren’t going to find better in Berlin, close to U Bann for travel into city
Parking was good, easy to find, location next to U bann (underground train)
the hotel itself was very good, but the area was sketchy
good breakfast, clean and nice room
sketchy area
Gener
The location is great. Next to the metro and the neighborhood has a lot of places to eat. The room was okay. It was generally clean.
There was a bad smell in the elevator and also I found a bit questionable how there was a 3 in 1 shower gel/hair shampoo/hand wash. Also there shower curtain was a bit dirty.
Very good
A really big room and a big bathroom for one person, next to the metro station and bus stop, so you can move easily around the city. Helpful receptionists and 24h open so you can ask anything you need.
There was a bad smell on the corridor and the Wi-Fi was really bad at the room.
Good
Nice location, right next to metro station. Bars, restaurants and grocery stores around. Room was clean.
The room was smaller than expected, quite dark. You can hear if someone is walking or talking in the hallway.
Pleasant
Close to city center.
Wi-Fi did not work.
Would stay again.
Location and price
The snack vending machines available only accepted local coin currency. As a visitor from the US who only carries a card in their wallet I would have wanted to see a card reader on the vending machines.
Cheaper hotel good for a night or two
Helpful staff, great location close to the metro and restaurants, cheaper price compared to other hotels in Berlin
Weird smell/ poor ventilation in some part of the hall on 1st floor, no table/ desk in the triple room, no fridge in the room
Overall very good
Good location and amenities
Warm due to work in being done to room opposite us
