Hotel & Apartments Zarenhof Berlin Prenzlauer Berg
About
Look, I'll be honest – when I first walked up to the Zarenhof in Prenzlauer Berg, I wasn't expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? This spot actually surprised me. The building itself has this understated charm that fits perfectly with P-Berg's whole vibe – not trying too hard, just solidly comfortable in its own skin.
What really won me over was the apartment setup they've got going. I mean, having a proper kitchenette changes everything when you're staying somewhere for more than a couple nights. You can grab fresh bread from one of those amazing German bakeries (there's literally one every few blocks around here) and actually have a civilized breakfast instead of hotel continental whatever. The rooms feel lived-in rather than sterile – some might call that dated, but I found it refreshingly real. And honestly, after spending days wandering around the cobblestone streets and vintage shops that Prenzlauer Berg is famous for, coming back to somewhere that doesn't feel like a corporate box was perfect.
The location is what really seals the deal though. You're right in the heart of what used to be East Berlin's bohemian quarter – and while it's definitely gotten more polished over the years, it still has that creative energy. The tram connections are solid (way better than dealing with Berlin's sometimes unreliable S-Bahn), and you can walk to Kollwitzplatz market on Saturdays, which honestly has some of the best organic produce I've found in the city. Plus, Mauerpark with its famous Sunday flea market is close enough that you'll hear the karaoke echoing on weekend afternoons – charming or annoying depending on your mood, but definitely authentic Berlin. The 7.8 rating makes sense to me; it's not luxury, but it delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense. If you want marble bathrooms and room service, look elsewhere. But if you want to actually feel like you're living in Berlin for a while rather than just visiting it, the Zarenhof gets it right.

Location, balcony, bathroom
Good rooms, great location. Solid choice for city center.
Just a few steps away from U-Bahn, trams and buses into the centre The hotel provided me with a walk-in shower, which was needed at I was walking with a crutch. I had arranged this in advance with a very helpful reception. Breakfast was varied, well laid out and regularly replenished Bedroom was big with a settee, chairs and desk. Wi-fi was very good
We checked in late - 11pm and our room was on the top floor and comfortable but it did not have a kettle. My husband is a caffeine addict so in the morning I requested a kettle and we were actually moved to another room on the second floor with a kitchenette and balcony. It was just right and the receptionist even brought the new key to our old room in the morning. I was very impressed with their customer service and the breakfast was great too with a very good selection of hot and cold food. There are lots of bars and restaurants nearby in this bustling part of Berlin.
