About this stay

About

You know what caught me off guard about Numa Berlin Kater? The lobby actually feels more like stepping into a friend's really well-designed apartment than some sterile hotel reception. I mean, it's right there on Warschauer Straße – literally a two-minute walk from the S-Bahn station – but somehow they've managed to create this calm, almost residential vibe despite being in the heart of one of Berlin's buzziest neighborhoods.

The thing about staying here is you're basically planted in the sweet spot of Friedrichshain. Walk left toward the river and you'll hit East Side Gallery in about ten minutes (honestly, doing that walk at sunset is pretty spectacular). Head the other direction and you're wandering into all those side streets packed with cafes that don't even bother with English menus because they know the locals will find them anyway. The rooms themselves are refreshingly unfussy – clean lines, decent-sized windows, and thank god, blackout curtains that actually work. The whole tech-forward check-in thing grows on you too, though I'll admit I was skeptical at first. No hovering desk clerks, just grab your key code and you're sorted.

What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays inside, considering you've got trams rattling by and the general Warschauer Straße energy happening right outside your window. The soundproofing is legit – I could barely hear my neighbors, which in Berlin hotel terms is honestly impressive. The bathrooms are compact but smartly laid out, with one of those rainfall showerheads that actually has decent pressure. Small touches matter when you're dealing with Berlin's unpredictable weather and need a proper hot shower after walking around all day. The neighborhood itself is perfect for that mix of tourist must-sees and actual Berlin life – you can easily stumble into Kreuzberg for dinner or catch the U1 to hit Museum Island, but you're also surrounded by the kind of bars and späti corner shops that make you feel like you're getting the real experience. Honestly, for a 4-star place with an 8.2 rating, it delivers exactly what you'd hope for without any of that trying-too-hard boutique hotel nonsense.

Cosy retreat, beds suit mumma bear, when this mumma loves a papa bear bed.

I loved that it gave us a space to reset after a busy few weeks. That we could regroup and get things like laundry done.

What could be improved: Once we knew how to access the property that was easy enough, but the arrival and going up and down stairs with luggage looking for our entry, before understanding we had to cross the courtyard, as well as the softness of the beds contributed to the stress that had me do my back in. (It wasn’t just those things, but they didn’t help.) There was a raging fight with the family across the way from us - I don’t know the rules around reporting with family violence in Berlin, but once I realised the fight was on the block and not on the street (as I had initially thought) I knew I would have called the authorities for a welfare check or intervened myself had this been at home. I am hopeful that this communication will not impact the people in the adjacent apartment negatively as I’d prefer knowing they (particularly the women in the home) had the support they needed. I am writing this on a transit day. DB has been terrible to ride (they are the reason we checked in at 7 in the morning instead of 7pm the night before.) my son is grouchy and is the one who selected “fair” on his evaluation. I would have selected good.

Good for a 2 night stay

Very modern room, speedy WiFi, the apartment was tidy and well equipped (even a fan, wonderful!). We chose this location due to a concert in the nearby Uber arena, and it was amazing, next to the U-Bahn and S-Bahn to the airport, and a very nice mall and many restaurants and bars.

What could be improved: Upon check in, entering the building was easy with the code. What wasn’t easy, is to find the room. It should have been mentioned that the room is in the inner courtyard, and not in the first building, so we had to climb 5 floors with a suitcase, just to realize it’s not there. Better instructions needed. Also, we wanted to check out a bit later (check out time is 11:00, we asked for 12:15). They answered real quick via WhatsApp, but unhelpful at all. They said that the option should be on the app, but it wasn’t. It took them 9 hours to figure it’s not possible. Also, on the app it showed there was an availability for our room for the next night, so why not grant the later check out (not even by paying)? It was very unpleasant and one of the main considerations of which, we might not come back to any Numa hotel. Shower door doesn’t close (problem with the rubber), makes the floor slippery and dangerous.

Ideal for a few nights away if you know Berlin.

Lots of space. Clean and comfortable. Towels. Kettle. Big area to socialise/eat. Near the train station and tram. Near food and convenience stores.
