Honestly, I wasn't expecting much when I first rolled up to Pappel on Pappelallee – the name literally means "poplar trees" in German, which seemed almost too simple for a 4-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the understated approach works perfectly, and this little gem in Pankow absolutely nails it.

The thing about staying in Pankow is that you're getting the real Berlin experience without the tourist circus of Mitte or the party chaos of Friedrichshain. Pappelallee itself is this lovely tree-lined street (hence the name, I guess) that feels properly residential but not boring – there's actually a decent bakery just a few doors down where locals queue up for their morning bread, and the U2 line at Eberswalder Straße is maybe a 10-minute walk, so you're not exactly stranded out here. The hotel sits right in this sweet spot where you can grab groceries at the Edeka around the corner, but you're also close enough to Kollwitzplatz that you can wander over for the Saturday farmers market without breaking a sweat.

What really got me about Pappel was how they've managed to feel both polished and unpretentious – like, the lobby doesn't scream "LOOK HOW FANCY WE ARE" but everything just works really well. The check-in was refreshingly quick (no endless upselling), and the staff actually seemed to know the neighborhood when I asked about dinner spots. The rooms have this clean, minimalist vibe that doesn't feel sterile – think warm wood accents and windows that actually open properly, which is honestly a godsend during Berlin's stuffier summer months. I mean, the coffee machine in my room was miles better than the usual hotel swill, and there's something to be said for blackout curtains that actually block out the morning light when you've been out exploring Berlin's legendary nightlife. The whole place runs quietly too – I never got woken up by slamming doors or elevator dings, which tells me they've thought about the little details that actually matter when you're trying to sleep. With an 8.8 rating, they're clearly doing something right, and after spending a few nights there, I can see why people keep coming back. It's the kind of place where you feel like you're staying in Berlin rather than just visiting it.
