4 Personen Altbau nahe Kurfürstendamm – Othello
About
Look, I'll be honest – when I first saw the name "4 Personen Altbau nahe Kurfürstendamm - Othello," I thought it was going to be one of those sterile vacation rental situations where you're basically camping in someone's IKEA showroom. But this three-star spot actually surprised me in the best way possible. The Altbau part isn't just marketing speak – you're genuinely staying in one of those gorgeous old Berlin buildings with the high ceilings and original moldings that make you feel like you've stepped into a prewar novel. The place sleeps four comfortably, which is honestly rare to find in this part of the city without paying an absolute fortune.
What really sold me on this place was the location, and I mean that in ways beyond the obvious Ku'damm proximity. You know how some places say they're "near" a major street but you end up walking fifteen minutes through sketchy underpasses? Not here. You're actually close enough to hear the buzz of Kurfürstendamm when the windows are open, but tucked away on a side street that stays surprisingly quiet at night. I was expecting typical Berlin street noise – the late-night trams, drunk tourists stumbling back from bars – but the courtyard-facing rooms (at least the one I stayed in) were peaceful enough that I actually overslept my first morning there. The building has that solid, thick-walled construction that modern places just can't replicate.
The 8.1 rating makes perfect sense once you spend a day or two there. It's not trying to be the Adlon or anything fancy, but everything works the way it should, and there's this lived-in comfort that you don't get in chain hotels. The kitchen setup is actually functional – I mean, you can cook real meals, not just heat up instant noodles. The shower has proper water pressure, which anyone who's stayed in Berlin apartments knows is basically winning the lottery. What I really appreciated was having space to spread out. Four people could realistically stay here without wanting to murder each other, and in a city where hotel rooms are usually shoebox-sized, that's saying something. Plus, you're walking distance from both the shopping chaos of Ku'damm and the more interesting neighborhoods where actual Berliners hang out. No need to figure out the U-Bahn every time you want to grab decent coffee or find a grocery store that doesn't cater exclusively to tourists.
