Schulz Hotel Berlin Wall at the East Side Gallery
About
You know what struck me first about the Schulz Hotel? It's literally steps away from the East Side Gallery – I mean, you walk out the front door and there's the longest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall right there, covered in all that iconic street art. I've stayed at plenty of places that claim to be "near" major attractions, but this is actually next to it. You can hear the tourist groups shuffling by during the day, which honestly isn't bothersome since the rooms face away from the main gallery stretch.
The hotel itself is properly 3-star – nothing fancy, but everything works and it's clean. The lobby has this sort of industrial-meets-artistic vibe that fits the neighborhood perfectly. Friedrichshain can feel a bit gritty if you're not used to it, but that's part of the charm here. The staff actually knows the area well – when I asked about getting to Boxhagener Platz for the weekend market, the guy at reception gave me the kind of detailed directions you only get from someone who lives here. The rooms are compact but thoughtfully laid out, and the beds are surprisingly comfortable for what you're paying. I mean, the bathroom's small enough that you might bump your elbow on the sink, but the water pressure's great and it heats up fast.
What really makes this place work is the location within the location, if that makes sense. Sure, you're right at one of Berlin's biggest tourist spots, but walk five minutes in any direction and you're in proper residential Friedrichshain – craft beer spots, döner places that locals actually go to, and that whole creative energy the neighborhood's known for. The S-Bahn station at Warschauer Straße is maybe a seven-minute walk, so getting to Mitte or anywhere else is straightforward. Parking's pretty much impossible on the street (welcome to Berlin), but there's a garage nearby if you're driving. Honestly though, you won't need a car much from here. The 8.5 rating feels about right – it's not going to blow you away with luxury, but it does exactly what it promises and the location is genuinely special if you're into Berlin's recent history or just want to be somewhere with real character.

We stayed one night to both see the city and to have a good connection to the airport the next morning. For both requests the hotel met our expectations. It was also very clean, the staff is extremely friendly and I think it’s the best money-quality balance we could get in Berlin.
Central, available, easy to access and polite employees.
Ample breakfast
Even the room was small, it was very clean and comfy. The localisation is great. Check-in is super easy and fast.
I like that the beds come with a nightlight and long stand that fits a variety of items (small water bottles, meds, phones, eye covers, glasses etc.) The location is fantastic being across an sbahn station with a Rewe (grocery store) under it so getting food and water was very easy. This sbahn station (ostbahnhof) can be accessed directly from the airport and get pretty much anywhere in Berlin within 20 minutes. The pillow is very soft. I also appreciated having a virtual keycard since it can’t be demagnetized on accident.
Looked new, very clean, good breakfast, clean room, good hot shower, very close to train station with a direct train to airport. Supermarket also close by in the station.
Posh hotel in the centre of East Berlin, close to the Ostbanhof and Berlin Wall. Convenient transportation to the hotel by S-Bahn. Classy interior design as well as the surroundings. A good caffe bar for a small breakfast.
The location was great, it was easy to move around the city and back to the hotel. The rooms were clean and tidy and have a river view. Staff were friendly
I really appreciated the digitalization of the entire process – from check-in via a dedicated app to door access and check-out. Of course, this approach might feel somewhat impersonal to some, but it is extremely efficient and, above all, fast. The hotel is in an excellent location, right next to Ostbahnhof station, providing easy access to the subway, trains, and buses. Additionally, taxis are available 24/7, making mobility even more convenient.
