About

Look, I'll be honest – when I first walked into the Select Hotel Berlin Gendarmenmarkt, I wasn't expecting much from a 4-star place. But you know what? Sometimes these mid-tier hotels surprise you, and this one actually gets a lot right. The lobby has this clean, minimalist vibe that feels distinctly German – nothing flashy, but everything works exactly as it should. I mean, the check-in was smoother than half the fancy places I've stayed at, and the staff actually seemed to care about helping rather than just going through the motions.

What really sold me on this place was the location – and I'm not just throwing around that "convenient location" nonsense that every hotel claims. You're literally a five-minute walk from Gendarmenmarkt, which honestly might be Berlin's most beautiful square (yeah, I said it). The French and German cathedrals are right there, and if you're into classical music, the Konzerthaus is practically next door. But here's what the guidebooks don't tell you – you're also walking distance from some incredible local spots that most tourists miss. There's this little bakery around the corner that does these amazing berliner pfannkuchen that'll ruin you for hotel breakfast forever. Well, maybe not ruin, but you'll definitely be thinking about them.

The rooms themselves are... solid. Not Instagram-worthy, but comfortable in that no-fuss German way. The beds are actually decent – I'm picky about mattresses and managed to sleep well even after those long days of wandering around the city. The bathrooms are small but functional, and honestly, the water pressure was better than expected. One thing that impressed me was how quiet it gets at night, even though you're right in the heart of things. I was worried about street noise, but their windows must be pretty good because once you close them, it's peaceful. The WiFi worked without any drama, which seems basic but you'd be surprised how many places mess that up.

Is it perfect? No – the breakfast could use some work, and the rooms feel a bit dated if you're used to those sleek boutique hotels. But for the price point and that 7.6 rating, it delivers exactly what it promises. You're paying for location and reliability, not luxury, and sometimes that's exactly what you need. Plus, you'll save enough money to actually enjoy Berlin instead of blowing your budget on a hotel room you'll barely use. If you're planning to be out exploring the city most of the time – which you should be in Berlin – this place gives you a comfortable base without breaking the bank.

Travelers should reserve a hotel in Berlin at least two months ahead of their visit to ensure availability and secure better rates, especially during the peak summer season when the city hosts numerous outdoor festivals and cultural events.
