SO/ Berlin Das Stue
About
You know what caught me off guard about SO/ Berlin Das Stue? Walking up to this place, you'd never guess it used to be the Danish embassy back in the day. The building sits right there in Tiergarten – and I mean literally in the park, not just "near" it like most hotels claim. You can actually see the zoo from some rooms, which sounds gimmicky until you're sipping coffee at 7 AM watching the elephants start their day.
The whole vibe here is honestly pretty unexpected for Berlin. Most five-star spots in the city go hard on that minimalist concrete aesthetic, but Das Stue feels more... lived-in? The lobby has these incredible taxidermy pieces (sounds weird, I know, but it works) and the staff actually remembers your name after day one. I stayed here during Fashion Week last year and even with the chaos, check-in was smooth – no standing around for twenty minutes while they "prepare your room." The Casual Restaurant downstairs does this thing with locally-sourced ingredients that doesn't feel pretentious, and their Sunday brunch is packed with locals, which is always a good sign.
What really sold me though was the location situation. You're basically living in Berlin's Central Park, but you can walk to Potsdamer Platz in fifteen minutes if you cut through the park. The Kulturforum is right there too – perfect if you're hitting up the Philharmonic or any of those museums. Parking is handled by valet (thank god, because street parking around there is a nightmare), and the rooms are genuinely quiet despite being in the middle of everything. The 8.7 rating makes sense – it's that sweet spot where luxury doesn't feel stuffy, and you're not paying extra just for marble bathrooms and gold fixtures. I mean, the bathrooms are beautiful, but you get what I'm saying. It's the kind of place where you might extend your stay just because leaving feels like too much work.
Berlin hotels range from charming boutique properties in the historic Mitte district to elegant converted buildings and modern accommodations near the Brandenburg Gate.
