Vienna House Easy by Wyndham Berlin Prenzlauer Berg

You know what struck me first about the Vienna House Easy? It's actually got personality – which honestly surprised me for a chain hotel. I mean, Prenzlauer Berg has this whole thing where modern places either try way too hard to be hip or they're completely soulless, but this one finds a nice middle ground. The lobby has this clean, Scandinavian-ish vibe without being sterile, and the staff seemed genuinely helpful rather than just going through the motions.

The location is where this place really shines though. You're right in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg, which – if you haven't been – is sort of like Berlin's version of Brooklyn before it got completely gentrified. Still has character, you know? You can walk to Kollwitzplatz in about five minutes (that's where the Saturday farmers market is, by the way), and the Kulturbrauerei is practically around the corner. I loved that I could grab proper coffee and a pretzel from the bakery downstairs before the hotel breakfast even started. Speaking of breakfast, it's decent – nothing fancy, but they had actual good bread and real butter, which is more than I can say for some four-star places I've stayed.

The rooms are what you'd expect from a well-run three-star – clean, comfortable beds, decent shower pressure. No complaints there, though the walls aren't exactly soundproof if you're unlucky enough to be next to someone who thinks 2 AM is phone call time. But honestly, for an 8.2 rating, I get it. It's reliable without breaking the bank, and the whole area comes alive at night without being obnoxiously loud. You've got the tram lines right there (M2 and M10), so getting to Mitte or Kreuzberg is easy, but I actually found myself just staying in the neighborhood most evenings. There's something about those tree-lined streets and the mix of young families and artists that just works. Plus, if you're into the whole East Berlin history thing, you're walking distance from Bernauer Straße where they've preserved part of the Wall – way less touristy than Checkpoint Charlie but just as meaningful, maybe more so.
