CALMA Berlin Mitte
About
You know what struck me first about CALMA Berlin Mitte? The name actually fits – there's this genuinely calm vibe the moment you walk in, which honestly surprised me given it's smack in the middle of one of Berlin's busiest districts. I mean, Mitte can be absolutely chaotic, especially around Hackescher Markt and Alexanderplatz, but somehow this 3-star spot manages to feel like a little retreat from all that urban madness.
The thing is, CALMA gets the balance right in a way a lot of Berlin hotels mess up. It's not trying to be some fancy boutique place with overpriced cocktails and Instagram-worthy lobbies, but it's also not one of those sterile business hotels that make you feel like you're in an airport. The rooms have this clean, minimalist thing going on – very German, if you know what I mean – but with enough personality that you don't feel like you're sleeping in an IKEA showroom. The beds are actually comfortable (which, let's be honest, isn't always a given at this price point), and the soundproofing is surprisingly good. I stayed there during one of those late spring weekends when everyone's out drinking until 4 AM, and I barely heard the street noise.
What really won me over was how the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood. When I asked about getting to the East Side Gallery without dealing with tourist crowds, the guy at reception didn't just hand me a generic map – he told me about this little detour through the Nikolaiviertel that cuts out most of the chaos. And when I mentioned wanting decent coffee that wasn't Starbucks, he pointed me toward this tiny roastery about three blocks away that I never would've found on my own. That's the kind of local knowledge that makes a difference, especially in a city like Berlin where the best stuff is often hidden in plain sight. The 8.6 rating makes total sense to me – it's one of those places that consistently delivers without any major surprises, good or bad. Check-in was smooth, the WiFi actually worked throughout the building, and housekeeping kept things tidy without being intrusive. It's not going to blow your mind, but honestly? Sometimes that's exactly what you want – a reliable base in the heart of the city where you can crash between exploring all those galleries in the Scheunenviertel or bar-hopping around Rosenthaler Platz.

The room was very spacious for 4 people. Very clean. Central location.
The room and bed was very nice. The ability to get in/out with a phone was a bonus. And, of course, the location is great. Check out the Pho place down the street!
The breakfast was good, the staff is friendly, there is an opportunity to iron your clothes if you need 😉 I liked the app service that allowed me to check in and out easily.
Great location, quiet neighbourhood, walking distance to the major attraction sites; Self card-less check-in is something new and I like it; We chose a small size room, but the room size is actually bigger than we expected, and the room is clean and cozy, the facilities are in great condition; Friendly and helpful staff; great breakfast buffet; Overall, a great value for the money
Great location staff were very polite and informed, helpful
Location, ease of check in, comfortable beds, very clean unit
Cozy environment, very nice staff, good breakfast, close location to U-bahn, less than 5min to REWE, staff speak english, spacious room (4persons room), good sofa-bed for two. There is a space for evening drinks included.
Overall, the place was nice. We made a last-minute booking due to a canceled bus and the need for an overnight stay. The automatic check-in process was very convenient. The only drawback is that check-in outside of desk hours requires internet access. Fortunately, we had internet, so it wasn't an issue for us. The room was more than basic, designed well, and felt new and clean. A complimentary bottle of water was a small touch that made the differece. We decided to try the breakfast, and it was excellent. Additionally, the lobby and dining room were beautifully designed.
While the gates and doors are automated (using their website), they still have a reception counter where you can ask for assistance. We have a person with mobility issues as well as many luggages, luckily there is level access all the way from the entrance, to the elevator, and to the room. Water and hot drinks like coffee or tea are unlimited at a certain time period until 9pm. Decent breakfast is available. Plenty of food options a short walk away, also near tram stop and historical sites.
Spacious and clean and seemed to be handy to transport, restaurants and sights. Also, breakfast was reasonably priced, and staff were friendly and courteous.
