Clipper Boardinghouse – Berlin-Gendarmenmarkt
About
Honestly, I wasn't expecting much when I first walked up to the Clipper Boardinghouse – I mean, the name doesn't exactly scream luxury, you know? But this place completely caught me off guard in the best way possible. It's tucked right in the heart of Berlin's most stunning square, and when I say heart, I'm talking about being practically neighbors with the French and German cathedrals that make Gendarmenmarkt so ridiculously photogenic. You'll step outside in the morning and there's this moment where you actually have to remind yourself you're not on a movie set.
What really got me was how they've managed to nail that sweet spot between feeling boutique and actually being functional. The rooms have this understated elegance – think clean lines and quality materials without trying too hard to impress you. I actually loved that they didn't go overboard with the "design hotel" thing that's everywhere in Berlin these days. The beds are properly comfortable (and I'm picky about this stuff), and honestly, the sound insulation is better than you'd expect for being smack in the middle of everything. I was worried about noise since Unter den Linden is just a stone's throw away, but nights were surprisingly peaceful.
Here's what nobody tells you about staying right on Gendarmenmarkt – you're within walking distance of pretty much everything that matters, but without the tourist chaos of Alexanderplatz or the party madness of Kreuzberg. I could wander over to the Konzerthaus for evening shows, grab incredible coffee at that little place on Französische Straße (locals will know the one), or just sit outside and people-watch while the street musicians do their thing. The 8.8 rating makes total sense once you've been there – it's not trying to be the flashiest place in Berlin, but everything just works really well. Check-in was smooth, the staff actually seemed to care about what they were doing, and there's this lived-in quality that makes you feel like you've discovered something rather than just booked another hotel room. If you're the type who wants to feel like you're staying in Berlin rather than just visiting it, this place gets it right.

Great central location. Very friendly and helpful staff. All of high quality and standard. Well-equipped and -functioning apartment.
The staff was very helpful in helping rectify a booking problem; they took care of everything promptly and courteously.
It's a nice mini hotel with quiet and comfortable rooms. I was a bit misled by the photos into thinking our room had a kitchenette, which it didn't. However, there was a kettle, a nespresso machine, and a microwave. Would have been handy to have a stove, but we managed. Overall, it's a nice place to stay - very centrally located, with easy access to S-bahn, U-bahn, trams and buses. The museum island is within walking distance. The staff are very polite and ready to help.
great location - close to Friedrichstraße transport hub, 2 subway stations within a 10 min walking distance. landmarks and shops nearby. quiet neighbourhood and hotel, clean room, small but equipped kitchen for basic cooking.
I had been dubious about this place since as reviewers note, it is not a conventional hotel, but decided to try it. So glad I did. If you like trendy furnishing and daily services this is obviously not the place for you. But if you appreciate spacious large room, elegant bathroom with lots of privacy, making your own cozy breakfast without leaving your room, all in a wonderful convenient location with great restaurants at first floor doorstep, then you will love this place. The front desk staff was very nice and responsive and efficient. The apartment was clean, cozy and convenient. The location was wonderful, so easy to walk most places. Added to that were two great restaurants downstairs—Italian in front, Vietnamese in back; clean laundry room; taxi stand a few steps down the street towards the Westin Hotel. Clippers had everything I needed for the middle of a long trip and I wish I had stayed longer. Unfortunately I moved to a conventional hotel when my husband arrived (as he prefers a restaurant breakfast onsite) and we paid more for a place I liked less.
Brilliant place to stay ho e away from home. Excellent bed, shower, deck
Modern and large apartment in a very central location near the Brandenburg Gate and Museum Island.
Great location, good bed, good shower, close to food.
The service, location, space and the Italian restaurant coveniently situated downstairs make this my preferred accommodation in Berlin
The room had lots of good facilities, and it was very clean, and the bed was very comfortable. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The location was excellent: the hotel was not too noisy but right in the centre of town near lots of tourist attractions.
