Das Literaturhotel Berlin
About
You know what caught me off guard about Das Literaturhotel Berlin? Walking in, I was expecting some stuffy literary theme hotel with dusty book quotes plastered everywhere, but it's actually got this cozy, lived-in vibe that feels more like staying at a well-read friend's place. The whole concept revolves around German literature – and I mean really revolves around it, not just some halfhearted decorating scheme. Each room is dedicated to a different German author, and honestly, even if you're not a literature buff, there's something kind of magical about sleeping in a room inspired by Goethe or Heine. The staff actually knows their stuff too, which surprised me – they can tell you stories about the writers and recommend walking routes to places where these authors lived and worked around the city.
The rooms themselves are comfortable in that distinctly European way – not huge, but thoughtfully designed with dark wood furniture and lots of books (obviously). I stayed in the Fontane room on the third floor, and while the bathroom was compact, everything worked perfectly and the bed was genuinely comfortable. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night, even though you're right in the heart of Berlin. The building has thick walls, and the windows actually block out the street noise, which isn't something you can count on everywhere in the city. The breakfast is solid – nothing fancy, but good German bread, proper coffee, and they don't rush you out if you want to linger with a book from their collection downstairs.
Here's the thing about the location that the booking sites don't really capture – you're walking distance from Museum Island and Hackescher Markt, but you're on one of those quieter side streets that locals use as shortcuts. I found myself taking different routes each day just because there are so many interesting little alleys and courtyards nearby. The S-Bahn is maybe a five-minute walk, and there's this great little bakery around the corner that opens early if you need your coffee fix before the hotel breakfast starts. For a 3-star place, it punches above its weight – the service feels personal rather than corporate, and the whole literary angle actually works because they commit to it fully. I mean, where else can you fall asleep reading Rilke in a room dedicated to Rilke? It's that kind of attention to detail that made my stay memorable, plus the fact that I learned more about German literature in three days than I had in years before.

The whole place was really nicely decorated and the staff were super friendly
Even with November weather, the place is home away from home :)
Calm area of Berlin, stylish interior, lots of beautiful pictures and details, garden, tasty breakfast and very friendly staff! Due to the hot weather, we got great rooms on the ground floor instead of the attic accommodation. Suddenly I found a portrait of Svetlana Alexievich on the wall, our famous writer from Belarus. Lovely!
This is a very cute little hideaway in the big city. I love the vintage vibe and furniture. The breakfast was supreme, with self-made jam and lovingly prepared food in a wide variety of sweet and savoury dishes. They have an ancient old Calico cat named 'Mary' who's roaming the premises which I adored. The owner and staff are super attentive and friendly. It feels more like you're staying with your auntie who's doting on you than being in a hotel. I stayed in a single room facing the quiet rear-side and it was a perfect resting place for me.
The staff is excellent, cleanliness spotless, and the room - wow! The decor is different from any other hotel I've been to and is very befitting.
So cozy! Pleasant staff that were very helpful!
The location, the garden and the customer service were excellent. Breakfast was a nice touch
It was like time traveling, to a space to relax and connect. The hotel was very comfortable, the staff was extremely friendly, welcoming and helpful! The beds were very comfortable, the apartment very spacious and very nice decorated! The neighborhood is very quiet, a walking distance from an S-Bahnhof. I can highly recommend this hotel for a family.
This is a another kind of hotel experience.
