Garner Hotel Berlin – Spandau by IHG
About
Look, I'll be honest - when I first pulled up to the Garner Hotel on Freiheit street, I wasn't expecting much from Spandau. Most people think of it as this far-flung corner of Berlin where you go to see the prison and maybe grab lunch at the Christmas market, but this place actually surprised me. The hotel sits right in the heart of old Spandau, and you know what? That's exactly where you want to be if you're staying out here.
The building itself has this solid, understated vibe - very IHG in the best way, meaning everything works like it should without trying too hard to impress you. Check-in was smooth (they speak excellent English, which honestly isn't always a given in the outer districts), and the lobby has this clean, modern feel that somehow doesn't clash with the historic neighborhood outside. I mean, you're literally a two-minute walk from the Zitadelle, which is pretty cool when you step back and think about it. The rooms are what you'd expect from a solid 4-star - comfortable beds, decent-sized bathrooms, and those floor-to-ceiling windows that actually open, which I always appreciate. Nothing fancy, but thoughtfully done.
What really won me over, though, was the location itself. Freiheit street is this charming pedestrian zone lined with cafes and shops, and unlike the tourist traps in Mitte, the prices here are actually reasonable. There's a fantastic Italian place called Da Vinci maybe fifty meters away, and the Saturday market in the old town square is genuinely one of Berlin's hidden gems - locals buying fresh produce and flowers, kids running around, that whole authentic neighborhood feel you can't fake. The S-Bahn connection to central Berlin is surprisingly good too (about 25 minutes to Friedrichstrasse), though I'd recommend getting a day pass because individual tickets add up fast. Parking was easy - there's a garage right underneath, which anyone who's tried to park in central Berlin will tell you is worth its weight in gold. The staff seemed to know their stuff about getting around the city, and they were genuinely helpful about restaurant recommendations rather than just pushing the hotel restaurant. I stayed during a quieter period in October, so I can't speak to how busy it gets during peak season, but the whole area has this relaxed, lived-in quality that makes you feel like you're experiencing actual Berlin rather than just visiting it.

Nice nice
Location V helpful staff View Lovely room Will def choose again when I visit berlin , 20 meter from stresow s bahn
Only hiccup is we found last occupants jumper , which means not brilliant job of cleaning , but saying that, def go again
Great place,
Great panorama view
Arrived one hour in advance (4pm instead of 5pm) and the room was not ready yet, had to wait. Not a big deal
Superb
Location was good, good facilities, the mini shop was perfect when arriving back late at night and breakfast was good.
The air conditioning wasn't working during a heat wave, meaning we had to sleep with the window open meaning the noise from the train was more disturbing than it might have been otherwise.
Fab location on direct S bahn route
Great location to travel around the city, on a Sbahn stop. Direct S9 line from airport to hotel
First room we were in had a leaking shower door, we were moved into a lovely room as soon as we complained and the issue was looked at.
Very good
Clean comfortable friendly stuff
Nothing
Everything was fine
The restaurant is on the 16th floor and it has beautiful view to the city
Effective, comfortable & convenient with great service from
Location near the Messe in the opposite direction to the crowd. Directly opposite the Train station. Clean, comfortable, chic rooms and really great Front Desk staff - particularly Raphael and his lady colleague (I cannot remember her name) who went out of their way to help me and my team.
Just one irritation - why not have Tea/Coffee making facilities? A simple kettle in the rooms would not cost much….
It's my 4th stay in that place and every time I'm in Berlin I'm choosing that hotel.
I'm always in love in view from my room (this time 14th floor) and from breakfast floor. Along with comfy bad and huge windows it makes it great place to stay.
One thing is that there's no place (as far as I know) I could go by foot to eat something in the evening. Second thing is old AirCon controller - I mean we didn't know how to turn it off and to be honest even with the highest possible temp. it still was a little cold in the room, cause Air Conditioning could blow a heat.
Very good
Everything except the reception staff was great.
The staff was not friendly, reluctant to answer questions clearly, and were visibly making fun of guests, even in front of their faces. For such a great hotel, most of the receptionists staff was highly unprofessional.
Very good
Location was close to where I wanted to be
i had to pay over 3 euros for a teabag as there was only complimentary coffee in the room and I am allergic to coffee
