Homely Berlin – New Build , near River , Main Station , Family & Business
About
You know what struck me first about Homely Berlin? The name actually fits – and I mean that in the best possible way. Walking up to this new build on Hedwig-Porschütz-Straße, I wasn't expecting much from the address (honestly, try pronouncing that street name after a long flight), but the moment you step inside, there's this immediate sense that someone really thought about what travelers actually need.
The location is sort of brilliant in that understated Berlin way. You're right in Mitte, which sounds fancy until you realize you can literally walk to Hauptbahnhof in about eight minutes – I timed it because I'm weird like that. The Spree is practically around the corner, and here's something the booking sites don't tell you: there's this lovely walking path along the river that hardly any tourists know about. Perfect for shaking off jet lag or clearing your head after back-to-back business meetings. The building itself has that clean, contemporary German efficiency thing going on, but they've managed to avoid that sterile hotel chain feeling. The lobby smells like subtle cedar and coffee rather than generic "hotel scent," and the check-in process was refreshingly human – the staff actually remembered my name the next morning.
What really gets me is how they've nailed the family-business traveler balance, which is usually impossible. The rooms are spacious enough that you're not tripping over your colleague's laptop bag, but there are thoughtful touches like extra phone chargers and a proper desk setup that doesn't make your back ache. I watched a family with two kids settle in across the hall, and the parents looked genuinely relaxed – always a good sign. The soundproofing is excellent too, which matters when you're this close to the main station. I was worried about train noise, but honestly, you hear more bird sounds from the courtyard than railway clatter. Breakfast runs until 10:30, not some ridiculous 9am cutoff, and they actually have decent coffee – not that bitter hotel stuff that makes you hunt for the nearest café. The whole place has this feeling like someone who's traveled extensively designed it for people who travel extensively. Little things, like bedside outlets that actually work and blackout curtains that meet in the middle, make you realize how often hotels get the basics wrong. Plus, and this might sound silly, but the WiFi password is just "welcome" – none of that random string of numbers nonsense that takes five minutes to type in.
