Mehringdamm
About
You know what struck me first about the Mehringdamm? It's right there on this bustling street that actually feels like Berlin — not the sanitized tourist version, but the real deal where locals grab their morning coffee and argue about football. The hotel sits in Kreuzberg, which honestly is where I'd want to stay anyway if I'm trying to get a feel for the city. You're basically a five-minute walk from Mehringdamm U-Bahn station, and I mean that literally, not in that inflated hotel-speak way.
The place itself is solid three-star territory — nothing fancy, but they've got the basics down pat. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward (no upselling, thank god), and the staff actually seemed to know the neighborhood when I asked about dinner spots. My room was on the third floor facing the street, which meant some traffic noise in the morning, but honestly? That's just Berlin waking up. The beds are comfortable enough that I didn't spend the night cursing my booking choice, and the shower had proper water pressure — you'd be surprised how often that's not a given in European hotels. What I really appreciated was the little details: decent WiFi that didn't cut out every ten minutes, blackout curtains that actually blocked light, and a minibar that wasn't priced like they were selling liquid gold.
Here's the thing about staying on Mehringdamm — you're in this perfect spot where Kreuzberg starts getting interesting. Walk south toward Gneisenaustraße and you'll hit some of the best Turkish food outside of Istanbul (seriously, the döner situation around here is unreal). Head north and you're wandering into areas where street art isn't just tourist decoration, it's actually saying something. I spent one evening just walking around Bergmannstraße, which runs parallel and has this lovely mix of cafes and little shops that stay open late. The hotel's location means you can easily hop over to Friedrichshain for nightlife or catch the U6 straight up to Mitte when you need your dose of mainstream sightseeing. Parking is typical Berlin street parking — good luck with that — but honestly, you don't need a car here anyway. The whole area comes alive differently depending on when you're out walking around. Mornings it's all business commuters and dog walkers, evenings it transforms into something more relaxed and social.
Look, this isn't the kind of place you'd pick for a honeymoon or if you're trying to impress someone with luxury amenities. But if you want to stay somewhere that feels connected to actual Berlin life, where you can walk out the door and immediately be part of the neighborhood rhythm instead of trapped in some tourist bubble, the Mehringdamm delivers exactly what it promises. The 7.8 rating makes sense — it's good at what it does without trying to be something it's not.

Comfortable beds, spacious apartment, close to area with a lots of restaurants
garbage collectors who collected some garbage every day, making a lot of noise at around 7 am, but of course it's not the apartment's fault; homeless as in entire city;/

The location. The local area is really lively and good for shops and restaurants. It’s also in easy walking distance of the U Bahn and bus routes
The bathroom looks a bit old and dated but it’s functional.
