Motel One Berlin-Tiergarten
About
You know what? I wasn't expecting much from Motel One Berlin-Tiergarten when I first walked up – I mean, it's a chain hotel with "motel" in the name. But honestly, this place surprised me in the best way. The location alone is pretty brilliant – you're literally steps from Tiergarten park, which is perfect for morning runs or evening walks when you need to escape the city buzz. And here's something most people don't realize: you're actually closer to the Brandenburg Gate than you'd be staying in Mitte, but without all the tourist chaos right outside your window.
The lobby hits you with this unexpectedly sleek design – lots of dark wood and moody lighting that feels more boutique than budget chain. Check-in was smooth (they actually seem to staff properly, unlike some places), and I appreciated that they didn't try to upsell me on breakfast or city tours. The rooms are compact but intelligently designed – everything has its place, and the bed is genuinely comfortable. Sure, you're not getting a massive bathroom or a minibar, but the shower pressure is solid and the Wi-Fi actually works throughout the building. What really got me was the attention to small details: proper blackout curtains that don't leave gaps, bedside outlets positioned where you can actually reach them, and – this might sound weird – but the air conditioning isn't one of those ancient units that sounds like a freight train.
The neighborhood is where this place really shines, though. You're a five-minute walk to Potsdamer Platz if you want the whole modern Berlin experience, but turn the other direction and you're wandering through one of Europe's most beautiful urban parks. There's a solid Turkish place around the corner (the döner is legitimately good), and the S-Bahn connection gets you anywhere in the city without much fuss. I stayed here during a particularly busy conference week in September, and while other parts of Berlin were absolutely packed, this area maintained that perfect balance of accessible but not overwhelming. The 8.2 rating makes total sense – it's not trying to be the Ritz, but it does exactly what it promises without any unpleasant surprises. For the price point, especially if you're someone who spends most of your time exploring rather than lounging in your room, it's honestly hard to beat.
