Radisson Collection Hotel, Berlin
About
You know that moment when you walk into a hotel lobby and think "okay, this is actually impressive"? That's exactly what happened when I first stepped into the Radisson Collection on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße. The building itself has this fascinating history – it's in one of those classic Berlin structures that somehow survived everything the city's been through, and they've done this brilliant job of keeping the old-world bones while making everything feel completely modern.
What really got me was the location, honestly. I mean, you're literally steps from Museum Island (which, if you haven't been, is basically where Berlin keeps all its best historical treasures), and the Dom is right there looming over everything in the best possible way. But here's the thing most people don't realize – you're also perfectly positioned to just wander into the real Berlin. Cross the river and you're in the thick of all those little galleries and cafés in the Hackescher Markt area, or you can walk the other direction toward Alexanderplatz when you want that proper urban energy. The U-Bahn and S-Bahn connections are ridiculous – I think I counted four different lines within a five-minute walk.
The rooms themselves feel properly luxurious without being stuffy about it. Floor-to-ceiling windows that actually open (thank god, because sometimes you just need real air), and if you get one facing the river, well... the Spree isn't exactly the Thames, but there's something lovely about watching the tour boats putter by while you're having your morning coffee. The beds are the kind where you sink in just enough without feeling like you're being swallowed, and they've got blackout curtains that actually work – crucial if you're dealing with those endless Berlin summer evenings. I will say the bathroom marble can be a bit slippery when wet, so just watch your step after a shower.
Staff-wise, they seem to genuinely know the city rather than just reciting tourist board recommendations. Asked about late-night food options and got pointed toward this Turkish place on Torstraße that I never would have found otherwise – definitely not your typical hotel concierge suggestion. Check-in was smooth, no waiting around, and they sorted parking without me having to ask twice (because driving in Mitte is honestly a bit of a nightmare, but sometimes you need the car).
The breakfast situation deserves a mention too – it's one of those spreads where you can go full German with the cold cuts and dark bread, or stick to what you know. Coffee's actually good, which isn't always a given at hotel breakfast buffets. Gets busy around 8:30, so if you're not a morning person, either get there early or wait until after 9:30.
Look, Berlin has no shortage of places to stay, from hostels in converted squats to those massive chain hotels near Potsdamer Platz. But if you want something that feels both properly comfortable and authentically Berlin – without being precious about it – this place hits that sweet spot. You're paying for the location and the quality, sure, but you're also getting that sense of being right in the middle of everything that matters in this city.
