Garner Hotel Berlin – Checkpoint Charlie by IHG
About
Look, I'll be honest – when I first walked up to the Garner Hotel on Hedemannstraße, I wasn't expecting much. The building itself is pretty modern and sleek, but you know what really got me? You're literally a two-minute walk from where Checkpoint Charlie used to be. I mean, you can practically feel the history seeping out of the cobblestones around here.
The lobby actually surprised me – it's got this industrial-chic thing going on that somehow works really well. Dark wood, exposed concrete, but not in that try-hard way some boutique places do it. Check-in was smooth (thank god, because I'd been dragging my suitcase around Kreuzberg for way too long), and the staff seemed genuinely helpful rather than just going through the motions. My room was on the fourth floor, and honestly, it was exactly what I needed after a long day wandering around. Clean lines, comfortable bed, and – this is important if you're like me and always forget to pack chargers – plenty of outlets in all the right places. The bathroom was compact but well thought out, with one of those rainfall showers that actually has decent pressure.
What I really loved about staying here was how it sits right in this perfect sweet spot between tourist central and actual Berlin life. Walk five minutes north and you're at the Jewish Museum, or head south toward Mehringdamm and you'll find yourself in proper local territory with Turkish bakeries and little corner bars that don't even have English menus. The U-Bahn station at Kochstraße is basically around the corner, which means you can get anywhere in the city without dealing with the chaos around Potsdamer Platz. I actually ended up grabbing breakfast most mornings at this little café on Zimmerstraße instead of the hotel restaurant – not because the hotel food was bad, but because, well, when in Berlin, right? Though I will say their coffee in the lobby was surprisingly good for a chain hotel. The neighborhood gets pretty quiet at night, which was perfect for sleeping, but if you're looking for nightlife, you'll want to head toward Hackescher Markt or stick around Kreuzberg proper. One small thing that bugged me – the elevator is tiny and slow, so if you're on a higher floor with heavy luggage, just factor in an extra few minutes. But honestly, for an 8.1 rating and the location you're getting, that's pretty minor. This place just works, you know? It's not trying to be the fanciest hotel in Berlin, but it nails the basics while putting you right in the middle of one of the most historically fascinating parts of the city.

Excellent stay
Very good location (around the corner from U Bahn (U6) and Checkpoint Charlie) made it very easy to get around - just a few stops from central locations. Hotel was very welcoming (thank you to young man on front desk who recommended us places to visit - certainly added to our visit experience). Very clean (and cleaned every day). Room absolutely fine for stay. There is no air conditioning as previous comments have mentioned, but fans are provided, and these were good for us.
Superb
Nice, clean and cosy hotel, good location, nice breakfast, good price.
Good
Small and old tv and very small bathroom on child’s opinion
Superb
Liked everything about the hotel
I thought it was a little mean not to allow me an extra coffee and milk sachet, the guy at reception said the one on arrival is the only complimentary one.
Superb
Breakfast good, staff helpful
Well located comfortable bed
Comfortable pillow and mattress, decent size room, quiet
Tiny blankets, no temperature control in the room, expensive sub-average breakfast

Superb
This is a simple, but clean and cozy hotel not far from the center. A perfect place for those who, like us, come to explore the city by feet. The price is very reasonble.
I think some teaspoons, bottle-opener and other things like those would be a simple, yet useful addotion in the rooms.
Great place to explore Berlin.
Clean, tidy, good location.
Tea/Coffee facilities didn’t include decaffeinated and not much milk supply.
Great stay
The location was great and walking distance to the popular locations. Breakfast was really good and the bar area was nice and comfy
Would have preferred English tea bags in the bedrooms as the choices were mostly coffee.
