Homely Berlin – Spacious Flat Quiet, Friedrichstraße, River
About
You know what struck me first about this place? The name actually delivers – it really does feel homely, and yeah, that spacious flat part isn't just marketing speak. I mean, when you're used to cramming into those tiny European hotel boxes, walking into a proper apartment-style setup on Friedrichstraße feels like winning the accommodation lottery.
The location is honestly pretty brilliant if you know Berlin at all. Friedrichstraße runs right through the heart of everything – you're basically sandwiched between Mitte and Kreuzberg, which means you can stumble to Museum Island in one direction or hit the alternative scene in the other without breaking a sweat. The river reference in the name makes sense once you're there; you're close enough to the Spree that evening walks become this natural thing you just start doing. I actually found myself taking the long way back from dinner just to walk along the water – something about the way the city lights hit the surface, especially near the Bode Museum area.
What really sells this place though is how quiet it gets at night, which is honestly surprising given you're on one of Berlin's main drags. The flat itself has this lived-in feeling that's way more comfortable than staying in some sterile hotel chain. There's actual kitchen space where you can make proper coffee in the morning (thank god, because German hotel coffee can be... well, let's just say inconsistent). The whole setup makes you feel less like a tourist and more like you're crashing at a friend's place who happens to have excellent taste in neighborhoods. Sure, it's a 3-star situation so don't expect marble bathrooms or concierge service, but that 7.9 rating makes sense – it's the kind of place that does the basics really well without any pretense. The walk to Hackescher Markt takes maybe ten minutes if you're moving slow, and honestly, once you figure out the S-Bahn connections from Friedrichstraße station, the whole city opens up. I'd definitely stay here again, especially if I was planning one of those longer Berlin trips where you want to actually live in the city rather than just tourist your way through it.
