Hotel Altes Fährhaus
About
You know what really struck me about Hotel Altes Fährhaus? It's tucked away on this quiet stretch of the Havel River in Spandau, and honestly, I almost drove past it the first time. The building has this understated charm - sort of a converted riverside house that doesn't scream "hotel" from the street, which I actually loved. You're right on Aalemannufer, and while that might not mean much if you're not familiar with Berlin, it's basically this peaceful waterfront road where locals walk their dogs and cyclists cruise by. The whole area feels refreshingly un-touristy, even though you're still technically in Berlin.
The rooms are what you'd expect from a solid 4-star place - clean, comfortable, nothing too fancy but definitely well-maintained. I mean, the bathroom was spotless and the bed was actually comfortable (you know how hotel beds can be a gamble). What really won me over though was stepping out onto the little balcony and realizing you're looking right out over the water. There's something genuinely relaxing about watching the occasional boat drift by, especially in the evening when the light hits the river just right. The staff seemed to really know their stuff too - not in that overly rehearsed way, but like they actually cared about the place. Check-in was smooth, and they had solid recommendations for dinner spots nearby that weren't just the obvious tourist traps.
Here's the thing about staying in Spandau - it gives you a completely different perspective on Berlin. You're about 20 minutes from the city center by S-Bahn, but it feels like you're in a different world entirely. The old town area is walkable from the hotel, and there's this surprisingly good restaurant scene that most visitors never discover. Parking was easy too, which honestly is worth mentioning because that can be a nightmare in other parts of Berlin. The neighborhood gets quiet at night - not dead quiet, but that pleasant residential quiet where you can actually sleep with the windows open. I stayed there in late spring and could hear birds in the morning instead of traffic, which felt like a small miracle in a city this size. The 8.3 rating makes sense to me - it's not going to blow your mind, but it does everything right without any real downsides. If you want to experience Berlin beyond the typical tourist bubble and don't mind a short train ride to get to Museum Island or Alexanderplatz, this place really delivers on that promise.
Visitors often choose Berlin apartments over traditional hotels because they provide more space, kitchen facilities, and the opportunity to live like a local in this magnificent German capital.

Superb
Clean and comfortable, friendly staff. Good sized room.
The room was quite hot at night.
Good
Very nice personal by hotel management…
Unfortunately no fruits and tea maker for breakfast, the location far from city center…
Nice hotel by the river
The location by the river, with outdoor public playground. The rooms are cozy and very clean. The staff is friendly. We stayed for 2 nights.
The stairs are too narrow and there is no indoor connection to the restaurant and reception (we stayed in Winter).
Nice place to stay, quiet and comfortable
The location is great, although takes a long from Berlin city center. The environment is great, all green and blue. The property is almost on the water. Although there were some clening issues, the rest was very good.
Better cleaning. A coffee machine would be fine for hot water in case you need a cup of tea or coffee.
Superb
terrace by the water, the hotel is on a mavelous spot. rooms were very nice too. Service very friendly.
Very comfortable and highly recommended
very comfortable and homely, staff service excellent
All great
it was all in all a great accommodation
the interior design is very nice, and the location is superb
the heater was not working very well that it was very cold at night..
Lovely little hotel in gorgeous surroundings!
The location was lovely and the room was clean and spacious. Lack of air conditioning made sleeping a bit difficult during 30+ temperatures, but otherwise the place was good. The restaurant on-site was nice and the food lovely. Having access to a play park was a bonus with a young child. Good place to stop while passing through Germany.
The breakfast was very simple and for the price (15€/adult) you’d expect something cooked and not just bread, cereal, juice etc.
Happy!!!
Very nice location
The breakfast could be better… only cold food… but the bread was delicious!!!
