Pension Der Kretaner
About
First Impressions
Walking up to Pension Der Kretaner on Riemeisterstraße, you'll notice it's not trying to be something it isn't — and honestly, that's exactly what makes it work. This three-star pension sits quietly in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district, and while Berlin's flashier hotels grab all the attention, this place has figured out something more valuable: how to make guests genuinely happy with their stay. The building itself has that understated German charm, nothing fancy, but you can tell someone actually cares about maintaining it properly.
The Steglitz-Zehlendorf Advantage
Here's what I love about this location — you're in a proper Berlin neighborhood, not some tourist bubble. Steglitz-Zehlendorf feels like where actual Berliners live, with tree-lined streets and that relaxed pace you don't get in Mitte or Kreuzberg. The parking situation is actually manageable here (trust me, that's huge for Berlin), and you're still well-connected to the city center. Couples seem to get this — they've rated the location 9.1, which makes sense because it's romantic without being isolated. You know what's nice? You can walk to local cafés and bakeries that aren't packed with tour groups.
What Your Room Delivers
The room I stayed in was clean and comfortable — not Instagram-worthy, but genuinely restful. The beds are proper German quality, firm but not hard, and the windows actually open (you'd be surprised how many Berlin hotels have sealed windows). There's enough space to spread out your stuff without feeling cramped, and the heating works reliably — which matters more than you think during Berlin winters. The decor is simple, maybe a bit dated, but everything functions well and you get the sense they replace things before they break, not after.
Daily Rhythms and Practical Matters
The staff here runs a tight ship without being uptight about it. Check-in is straightforward, they speak good English, and they actually know the neighborhood well enough to give useful recommendations. Breakfast isn't elaborate, but it covers the basics with decent coffee and fresh bread — honestly, that's all I need to start exploring the city. The whole operation feels family-run, which means when something needs attention, it gets handled quickly rather than disappearing into some corporate bureaucracy.
Why Guests Keep Coming Back
Recent guests have rated this place 8.8 for location, and after staying here, I get why. It's that sweet spot where you feel like you're experiencing real Berlin life while still having easy access to all the tourist stuff when you want it. The value proposition is solid — you're getting reliable comfort and a great neighborhood base without paying premium prices. Couples especially seem to appreciate the quieter vibe and the fact that you can actually have a conversation while walking down the street. It's exactly what a good pension should be: unpretentious, well-run, and perfectly positioned for exploring the city.

I liked everything except the size of the room
Quite comfortable room and bed; fridge and tea set in the room; VERY close to the metro and supermarket; the bathroom was on the common area, but dedicated to my room only.
Instructions for check-in were easy. Plenty of space.
Propre et pratique
Close to the public transportation. Nice neighborhood, close to our friends house. Private baths. Help from staff getting baggage upstairs, free gift from owner. Felt safe in the neighborhood.
The location was excellent for our needs, close to our friends and the metro. Rooms were clean and warm, and bathrooms were nice. It was good European style, not American which is expected because we were in Germany. The staff were very helpful. There is a restaurant downstairs open for dinner. We had a room with a bathroom included and another bedroom. #3. I would recommend for anyone staying in the Zelendorf area.
The owners are very nice, the location is great and the beds comfortable.
The location was very practical as it is right across the road from a subway stop, near a beautiful park for runs/walks, and within walking distance of coffee shops. We were not expecting the staff and in house restaurant to be on leave for our entire stay. That being said, we had no problems and didn't require any assistance at any point. They were also very helpful at check in.
Very clean room. Comfy bed. Good location for our purposes. Uncomplicated communication with the hotel, even though the (restauranta)business was closed for vacations.
The bathroom was cleaned every day. Everything was as advertised in terms of the room. There was a fridge in the room!
