Motel One Berlin-Upper West
About
You know what? I was honestly skeptical when I first rolled up to Motel One Berlin-Upper West. The name "motel" had me expecting some roadside throwback, but this place completely flipped my expectations. It's tucked right in the Upper West area – think of it as Berlin's answer to Manhattan's neighborhood with the same name – and the whole vibe is way more boutique hotel than anything you'd picture from that "motel" label.
The lobby hit me first with this sleek, almost minimalist design that somehow manages to feel warm instead of cold. Dark woods, pops of color, and these really comfortable seating areas where people actually hang out (not just pass through). Check-in was smooth – the staff switched between German and English effortlessly, which always impresses me. My room was compact but smart, and I mean really smart. Every inch was used perfectly, with built-in storage and this rainfall shower that honestly made me want to extend my stay just for the morning routine. The bed was firm in that European way that I've grown to love, and the blackout curtains actually worked – crucial when you're dealing with those long summer days Berlin throws at you.
What really sold me on this place was the location and how it connects you to the city. You're walking distance from the Charlottenburg area, which locals will tell you is where you go for that authentic Berlin café culture without the tourist crowds of Mitte. The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is close enough for an easy stroll, and honestly, being able to grab breakfast at one of those corner bakeries nearby instead of paying hotel prices? That's the kind of detail that makes a trip. The 8.5 rating makes total sense once you're there – it's not trying to be luxury, but everything it does aim for, it nails. The price point feels fair for what you get, especially considering you're in Berlin proper and not stuck out in some business district. I'd definitely book it again, particularly if I wanted that sweet spot between budget travel and actually being comfortable at the end of a long day exploring the city.
